Dutch The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague has suspended its investigation into the war on drugs in the Philippines. A temporary suspension was made to the Ambassador of the Philippines to the Netherlands Eduardo Malayan on application.

The Philippine Drug War is the country’s president Rodrigo Duterten campaign against drug users and traffickers.

Court has sought to find out whether crimes against humanity have been committed during the drug war and whether up to tens of thousands of civilians have been killed by police. The investigation covers the years 2011–2019.

President Duterte has become known for his hard grips on drug users and drug traffickers. He was elected president in 2016, when he promised to get rid of the country’s drug problems. Among other things, he gave the police a direct order to kill the suspects in the drug offenses if the police felt their lives were in danger.

Administration According to statistics, more than 6,000 people have died in the operation since July 2016. Human rights organizations have estimated that the reading is much higher than this. According to the organizations, thousands of people have died in the war, many of whom have been poor or petty criminals.

The Philippines resigned from the court in 2019 because the court had opened a preliminary investigation into Duterte’s actions. However, it has previously been estimated that an investigation is possible from the time the Philippines was a member of the court.

The Philippine position is still that the International Court of Justice has no jurisdiction over the country. The country resigned from the court in 2019.
