The diatribe between Microsoft and Sony regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by the Redmond company is reaching soap opera peaks between statements and counter-statements, accusations and accusations that the two companies are launching. (Here an article by Virginia Paravani which summarizes the history)
Waiting to know the final answer from the English CMA Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division of Microsoft gave an interview to the Wall Street Journal, where he began by declaring:
“it might be surprising, but I have no experience on how to do this kind of 70 billion dollar business. But I know that we are very focused on getting approval from major jurisdictions, so I spend a lot of time in Brussels, London and with the FTC here in the US. I would say that up to now the discussions have been very fair and honest”
According to Spencer, therefore, the tones of the clash reached by Microsoft and Sony are more than justified, given the importance that this acquisition covers on the market especially for the presence of Call of Duty, and then add:
“it is a huge acquisition, no doubt about it. Microsoft, for the role it plays in the technology sector, is a great company and I think the discussions that are taking place for an acquisition of this size are justified, I appreciate the fact that they are taking this time to evaluate it.“and then to underline that”We at Microsoft are really focused on getting this deal approved by the markets, there is confidence in that. I was in London last week, I continue to discuss with all the regulatory committees and remain confident about the success of this agreement“.
During the same interview then, Phil Spencer hoped that Call of Duty remains on PlayStation and indeed also arrives on Nintendo Switch.
