Have you ever wondered how much COVID-19 vaccines cost? The newspaper La Vanguardia has had access to the contract signed by the European Union and the pharmaceutical company responsible for developing the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine and has revealed this secret. The best saved so far.
“Vaccines and vaccination are free for all citizens », they report from the information page of the Government of Spain. This brief information is true because no Spaniard or resident in Spain has to contribute any financial amount for it.
The European Commission is the one that coordinates the purchase of the vaccines with the pharmaceutical companies using the European budget: «The (European) Commission finances part of the initial costs faced by vaccine producers in the form of advance purchase agreements. The financing provided it is considered a payment on account of the vaccines that will actually be purchased by the Member States», The European Commission communicated in a press release on November 11, 2020.
In that same note they announced a financing agreement between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and BioNTech of 100 million euros to “expand its manufacturing capacity to be able to supply its vaccines rapidly around the world.”
Of the doses negotiated with Pfizer, Spain corresponds to approximately one 10%, which has resulted in about 52 million doses (taking into account that two doses per person are necessary).
What was unknown was the cost per dose of Pfizer’s vaccine. According to the contract to which La Vanguardia has agreed, the first 100 million doses have been acquired by 17.50 euros each. The next 100 million doses are slightly discounted and the cost of the price drops to 13.50 euros. The 200 million vaccines purchased from Pfizer have cost 15.50 euros on average.
Another point that stands out in this contract is that exempts the pharmaceutical company from liability in the event that the vaccine causes any harm to third parties. Once the doses are delivered, the responsibility lies with the European Commission and member states. The multinational would not be held responsible and will not face any compensation, neither on the part of the company nor of the directors, nor workers, nor of the partners of this.
However, in the event of any failure in the manufacturing process of the doses, the pharmaceutical company take responsibility.
