The Federal Police arrested two suspects for attempting to intimidate the officer responsible for the seizure of R$500,000 from businessman Renildo Lima, husband of federal deputy Helena da Asatur (MDB-RR). The arrests took place on Sunday, the 15th, and this Monday, the 16th.
The detainees are a military police officer and a parliamentary aide who also worked as a driver. They had been detained in the same operation that arrested Renildo, on the 9th, in Boavista, on suspicion of vote buying and armed criminal association.
The pair had been released under precautionary measures, but the Federal Police identified that they were responsible for “coordinated actions to intimidate public authorities”, in this case the police chief.
The Federal Police asked the Electoral Court to issue arrest warrants, due to evidence of threats and obstruction of justice. The request was granted. With the revocation of the precautionary measures, the arrest warrant for the PM and the parliamentary advisor was reinstated.
When Renildo was arrested, Congresswoman Helena da Asatur denied on social media that the money was intended for vote buying: “To believe that moving your own money is synonymous with vote buying is pure ignorance. Now, should we close down businesses during election period? That’s all we need.”
In a statement, the Military Police of Roraima reported that the corporation’s internal affairs department is following the case and that “conduct that compromises the population’s trust and respect for the institution will not be tolerated.”
