Remember the case
On January 28, 2004, Labor tax auditors Erastóstenes de Almeida Gonçalves, João Batista Soares and Nelson José da Silva and driver Ailton Pereira de Oliveira were murdered at close range in an ambush in the rural area of Unaí, a city in the northwest of Minas Gerais. They investigated allegations of work similar to slavery. The episode became known as the Unaí Massacre.
The investigations identified farmers Antério and Norberto Mânica as those responsible for the crime. The brothers were sentenced to 100 years in prison, but appealed when they were free because they were first-time offenders.
José Alberto de Castro and Hugo Pimenta were convicted of hiring the shooters.
The only ones serving sentences so far were the three gunmen, Erinaldo Vasconcelos, Rogério Allan and William Miranda. Imprisoned since 2004, they were convicted in 2013.
In January of this year, crimes turned 20 years old. The massacre was the milestone for the creation of National Day to Combat Slave Labor.
