The 'new face'
While waiting for the green light to be turned on for the 2024 season of the World Endurance Championship, the Peugeot has officially announced the names of its six drivers who will line up behind the wheel of the 9×8. Among the majority of those reconfirmed, there is no shortage of 'news' for both sides, starting with the return of the Belgian Stoffel Vandoornefor the first time in the role of official driver since 2021.
Resta-Muller Exchange
Currently involved in Formula E with the DS Penske team, the former F1 driver had already participated in the 6 Hours of Fuji last year with the manufacturer Lion, replacing the injured Nico Muller after being promoted by the French team from the constructor role. However, with the departure of Gustavo Menezesthe Belgian will replace the latter for 2024. Consequently, Vandoorne will share the car #94 with Paul di Resta and Loic Duval, both reconfirmed. Di Resta, therefore, will not be part of the 9×8 crew #93 as happened last year. For this season, they will alternate on this hypercar Mikkel Jensen and Jean-Eric Vergnewith Nico Muller which will therefore move from #94 to #93. In fact, besides this exchange, Vandoorne represents the only novelty.
While waiting for the first seasonal appointment in Lusail for the Qatar 1812, the Technical Director of Peugeot Sport, Olivier Jansonniercommented on the choice of drivers and the approach to this world championship: “The level of competition in the WEC is such that no parameter should be overlooked, and we are taking advantage of this off-season to try to optimize each of them. Crew composition is an important piece of the puzzle, but information gathered during races and testing convinced us that we could still refine it. We are fortunate to have six very talented drivers and we have therefore chosen to optimize car by car by grouping them by set-up affinity for the benefit of performance.”
