We tried the new one Peugeot 408 Hybrid GT that is, the most powerful version in the range, with a 225 horsepower Plug-In Hybrid engine, a car similar to a crossover with an original line halfway between an SUV and a sedan. It is in fact placed between the 3008 and the 508.
Below you will find the video of the road test Peugeot 408 Hybrid; the new hybrid crossover front-wheel drive and raised suspension. The traction battery has a capacity of 12.4 kWh, and can be recharged up to 7.4 kW (optional charger) in about 2 hours. The plug-in hybrid powertrain, on the other hand, consists of a 180 HP 1.6 turbo internal combustion engine, combined with a electric motor front keyed in the 81 kW gearbox for a total power of 225 horsepower. Watch the review with the complete test of the road test of the new hybrid Peugeot 408 in GT version.
How is the new Peugeot 408 Hybrid
When switched on, the car starts in electric mode using the “Hybrid” mode, but if we are looking for more power, after a while the heat engine also intervenes to support it. If, on the other hand, we want to have fun around the bends or need to quickly overtake, the la will come in handy “Sports” modewhich guarantees full power of 225 horsepower and makes shifting quicker with the steering stiffening just enough. To be honest we preferred the latter heavier and less filtered as in the other modes. Of course there is also the “Electric” mode to travel exclusively on electric up to 135 km/h with an estimated range of 64 km.
Trim and soundproofing are the strengths of the Peugeot 408
The noise we perceive inside the passenger compartment is really contained, aerodynamic noise is practically non-existent and the background noise of the tires is barely mentioned even with the 20″ rims.
Another strong point of this car is certainly its own trim that is soft but not too compliant as on other French, it digests road bumps and depressions well without being “soft”. Even if the EMP2 platform it’s the same as the 308, this one feels more stable and more planted on the ground, then the increased wheelbase certainly helps. It has excellent cornering and does not skid when coming out, but follows the trajectory well. So the 408 is a crossover definitely travel-friendly.
Peugeot 408 only with automatic gearbox
There new Peugeot 408 is offered in all engine versions only with the 8-speed automatic gearbox with torque converter, the classic Aisin that we also find on other products of the group. It always has a rather fluid and soft operating logic; then when making sudden releases with the accelerator and especially in “Sports” mode it tends to tug a little, but it happens rarely, generally the changes are not even perceived. Present the paddles behind the steering wheel to change gears.
Energy recovery under braking with Brake mode
There brake mode it is activated via a small button inside the central tunnel to maximize energy recovery under braking. Good feeling with the brake pedal, you don’t hear the transition between regenerative mode and classic braking with discs. The latter seems effective to me in the first part of the pedal stroke, then it becomes not very modulable and we have to insist a little more to obtain greater braking power.
Peugeot 408 GT hybrid powertrain
The 1.6 turbo heat engine in this case it has 180 horsepower and 320 Newton meters, it makes its voice heard when accelerating but is still well muffled. The electric motor from 110 horsepower, therefore 81 kW and 250 Nm of torque, it also helps to restart, therefore it always provides a little help when recovering. In “Sport” the combined power of 225 horsepower is affected by the weight of about 1,700 kg, precisely due to the Plug-In Hybrid system with 12.4 kWh Li-ion battery. If acceleration is not particularly exciting, fortunately the additional weight is not felt when cornering where the car shows little body roll, remaining predictable and fun to drive.
Complete Adas on Peugeot 408 Plug-In Hybrid
There are 30 gliders on this Peugeot 408 ADAS, so as to provide level two assisted driving. Good the Adaptive Cruise Control with signal recognition, centering in the lane is less precise.
The resolution is appreciable rear camera which comes in handy together with the parking sensors, because it’s difficult to perceive the dimensions a bit, especially at the front where I can’t clearly see the side of the nose and I always have to lean forward a little. Obviously also at the rear visibility is reducedthanks to the decidedly small rear window, but at least the head restraints can be lowered.
Consumption and performance Peugeot 408 hybrid
During our consumption test to low battery we traveled between 12 km per liter and about 16.4 km per litre, with peaks of 20 km per litre, traveling a bit in the city and a bit on the freeway with peaks of 110 km/h. Obviously, with a charged battery it is possible to consume much less, reaching the declared consumption depending on the driving style and the route.
