President Gustavo Petro beheaded the Army leadership this Monday, in the midst of attacks by dissidents of the extinct FARC in the north of the department of Cauca and the neighboring south of Valle del Cauca. Through a statement, the Executive has announced that Luis Emilio Cardozo will replace Luis Mauricio Ospina as head of the Army. Thus, he recovers a long-serving military man who had been in retirement since August 2022, when the president came to power and displaced several of the oldest generals. “The national government trusts that the vast experience and leadership of General Cardozo will be fundamental,” the Casa de Nariño has assured.
The new head of the Army was born in Yotoco (Valle del Cauca) in 1967. He has a degree in Industrial Engineering from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and a master’s degree in Security and Defense. He was commander of the Army Air Assault Aviation Division, the Eighth Division and the Military Engineer Command. Likewise, he was coordinator of the strategic analysis group of the Ministry of Defense between 2008 and 2010, during the administrations of Juan Manuel Santos, Freddy Padilla de León and Gabriel Silva. His last position before his retirement was being chief of the Army’s operations staff.
