Peter Shilton was a famous English goalkeeper who went down in world football history for being the goalkeeper who received Diego Maradona’s goals in the World Cup in Mexico 86.
Shilton is still remembered, on each anniversary of ‘the hand of God’, Diego’s historic goal in that World Cup match.
“I was captain that day, it still hurts now. The only thing that interested me was winning the World Cup, it never occurred to me to change the shirt with Maradona, but looking at how much it has sold, maybe I should have done it,” he said. Shilton in recent interviews.
Shilton’s Addiction
In a note with the Sky News medium, Peter Shilton opened up and talked about his personal life, and specifically about the loss of millions in the game, during his 45-year gambling addiction. He adds that his wife, Steph, saved him.
“It was a long time before I realized that I had an addiction,” said the exporter.
His wife leads a charity that helps people suffering from addiction and the homeless.
Shilton played for three decades and became England’s most capped player.
But during that time he gambled millions on horses and on online platforms and later said he was ashamed of his addiction.
“When you’re an addicted player, you’re very quiet. You don’t want anyone to know, especially with the game,” the exporter explained to the BBC.
“You have a win every once in a while and then you think you’re going to get your money back, and you don’t. You’re losing money and wasting time and that’s really what I was up against,” he said.
“It was a very long time before I realized I had an addiction.”
