A day after his reality show Mass is Cash returned to the air with a new season, the litigation continues for Peter Gillis.
The owner of Oostappen Groep is going to object to a penalty of one million euros imposed on Wednesday for housing migrant workers at one of its holiday parks, De Berckt in Baarlo (Limburg). The Brabant holiday park king announced this on Wednesday after the municipality of Peel en Maas announced that it would collect the penalty.
Migrant workers
According to the municipality, checks in De Berckt showed that migrant workers were housed in the holiday park, and that is not allowed. Only recreation is allowed.
In its own words, the municipality had established in 2020 that migrant workers were living in the park. The municipality then ordered Gillis, on pain of a penalty, to ensure that those residents left there. However, in May this year, according to a spokesperson, the municipality noted that the migrant workers were still there, and this violation was also observed several times after that. The municipality then expressed its intention to collect the maximum amount of one million euros from Gillis.
Gillis submitted a so-called opinion against this, in which he objected. However, the municipality rejected this, and decided on Wednesday to effectively collect the penalty. Gillis can still object to this before a municipal committee. He will do so, his spokesman said.
If the municipality wants to do something for these migrant workers, they can speed up with the granting of permits and Peter Gillis will start building immediately.

According to Gillis, the claim of the municipality is time-barred. According to its spokesperson, the municipality of Oostappen would have asked no longer to accommodate migrant workers at the holiday park three years ago.
Gillis then applied for a permit to build housing for the people on a former car race track next to De Berckt, according to his spokesperson. “However, this permit is always delayed by the Act on the Promotion of Integrity Assessments. Apparently the government is questioning the integrity of the successful businessman who has his heart on his sleeve.”
“We are now three years later and there is still no permit,” said Gillis’ spokesman. “So if the municipality wants to do something for these labor migrants, they can speed up the granting of permits and Peter Gillis will start building immediately.”
