SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The area treated with pesticides grew 8.7% in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year, which allowed an increase in product sales amid expectations of a large crop in 2021/22, informed this Wednesday an entity that represents the sector.
In total, 209.3 million hectares were treated with pesticides in the period, an increase of 16.8 million hectares, said the National Union of Vegetal Defense Products Industry (Sindiveg), also warning of some problems in the supply of imported inputs.
Soy was the product with the largest area treated in the period (32% of the total), followed by pasture (20%), wheat (12%), corn (10%), sugarcane (7%) and other crops – the survey computes more than one application in the same area.
“This result is due to a series of factors, with emphasis on the beginning of summer planting and the expected increase in the 2021/2022 crop, in addition to the expectation of firm prices for the main commodities”, said the president of Sindiveg, Julio Borges, in note.
In volume, pesticides applied in the third quarter reached 154.6 thousand tons, against 145.1 thousand tons in the same period of 2020 (+6.6%).
Among the main product segments, there was growth of 14% in the use of fungicides, 12% in the use of insecticides, 7% in the use of seed treatment and 4% in the use of herbicides, according to a survey commissioned by Sindiveg to Spark Strategic consulting.
The market value of applied agricultural pesticides reached US$1.7 billion, an increase of 21.7% over July to September 2020.
The president of Sindiveg once again warned of concern regarding the global scenario, “which is unstable and of great concern, due to the scarcity of imported raw materials, rising costs and, especially, the lack of guaranteed delivery of inputs by China, our main supplier”.
Sindiveg, which brings together 27 members, distributed across the country’s various states, representing approximately 40% of the sector, is alert to rising costs of imported raw materials and logistical problems, added the official.
“Especially in recent weeks, we have been facing difficulties in receiving important inputs. The entity and all the associated industries work tirelessly to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, to avoid a possible lack of inputs, but the scenario is extremely worrying”, added Julio Borges.
