Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday, April 24, said that there is no information about the suspicion of Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov of treason.
“No, nothing is known about this. Now there are a lot of different interpretations around this whole thing. Here you need to rely on official information, all these arguments are nothing more than speculation,” he answered a question from journalists about the information that had appeared that Ivanov was suspected of treason.
Peskov added that it is necessary to focus on the data that comes from the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia and the court decision. The presidential press secretary said that Head of State Vladimir Putin has constant contacts with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. He did not talk about the details of the discussion of the situation with Ivanov.
Earlier that day, Ivanov was arrested until June 23, he was charged with committing a crime under Part 6 of Art. 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Receiving a bribe on an especially large scale”). According to investigators, he entered into a criminal conspiracy with third parties to commit a crime by an organized group – receiving a bribe on an especially large scale in the form of providing property-related services for the needs of the Ministry of Defense.
Ivanov’s detention was reported on the evening of April 23. Later, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian President was informed about the detention of the Deputy Defense Minister.
The Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation also announced that it was carrying out investigative actions against Ivanov. An Izvestia source close to law enforcement agencies reported that the arrest operation was prepared by FSB and Investigative Committee officers “for more than one day or even one month.”
Ivanov was born on August 15, 1975 in Moscow. Until 2012, he worked at enterprises of the country's fuel and energy complex, later he was deputy chairman of the government of the Moscow region.
