There are currently no decisions to ban VPNs in Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday, February 6.
“I can only say that now there are no decisions on this matter. This is what we need to proceed from,” he answered the corresponding question.
The day before, publications appeared in some media with reference to the head of the Safe Internet League, Ekaterina Mizulina, which reported a possible complete ban on VPN services in the Russian Federation from March 1. At a meeting with schoolchildren, when asked whether such a measure would be introduced, Mizulina answered “yes, most likely this is exactly the case,” writes “Gazeta.Ru”. However, later the commentary clarified that this publication is an interpretation of her words.
At the same time, on February 5, Roskomnadzor announced that means of bypassing blocking on the Internet are prohibited in the Russian Federation, and from March 1, a ban on the popularization of VPN services will come into force. The department added that a legislative norm will be introduced that will limit access to materials that advise using such means to bypass blocking access to prohibited content.
Prior to this, on November 12, 2023, the Ministry of Digital Development, in response to an appeal from the New People faction, stated that in Russia they would block certain VPN services that were recognized as a threat to the security of the Internet.
