Russia is interested in receiving a response from the US and NATO on the issue of security guarantees as soon as possible, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on December 25.

Earlier on Saturday, Peskov said that the possibility of a new meeting between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, would depend on negotiations on security guarantees.
On December 24, the press secretary of the Russian president said that the Russian Federation expects in January 2022 to receive concrete answers from the United States to proposals on security guarantees. At the same time, he stressed that the United States and European countries are conducting unambiguous maneuvers and exercises in the immediate vicinity of the borders of the Russian Federation, which cannot but cause concern on the Russian side.
A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the Russian Federation responded promptly and constructively to Washington’s proposals and sent its proposals on security guarantees. The President added that the American partners have declared their readiness for discussion and negotiations on security issues at the beginning of the year in Geneva.
At the same time, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Ryabkov spoke about the goals and tasks facing the negotiators of the Russian Federation in consultations with the United States on security guarantees. He declared the need to put an end to NATO’s eastward movement, as well as to exclude Ukraine from joining NATO. According to him, the American side is aware of Russia’s priorities.
On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia and the United States and NATO on security guarantees. As follows from the documents, in particular, the alliance should refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia. According to a White House source, the US presidential administration found some of the proposals useful and others unacceptable.
The day before, on December 16, the United States Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland noted that the United States expects Russia to de-escalate the situation around Ukraine, Washington is open for consultations in the Russia-NATO format, as well as through the OSCE. In addition, she pointed out that the United States, together with European countries, must determine whether there are Russian security concerns that they can mitigate.
