The Peruvian prosecutor’s office reported Tuesday that it will investigate the president Pedro Castillo when his term expires for the alleged crimes of influence peddling, collusion and illegal sponsorship.
“The National Prosecutor, Zoraida Avalos Rivera, opened a preliminary investigation to the President of the Republic, José Pedro Castillo Terrones, for the alleged commission of crimes against the public administration“Aggravated influence peddling, as an author, and collusion, as a participant, the agency said in a statement.
But the proceedings will be suspended until Castillo completes his mandate of five years, in 2026, since the president has “absolute immunity that transcends the criminal procedural sphere” in Peru.
The investigations will focus on three cases.
In the first one, Castillo is accused of allegedly having “intervened –without and indirectly–” in a public bidding process for the construction of a vehicular bridge over the Huallaga river, in the San Martín region, in northern Peru.
In the second, the investigating body investigates him for having allegedly intervened in a process for the acquisition of Biodiesel B100 in the local market for the period January-April 2022, “with the purpose that the Heaven Petroleum Operator company, led by the businessman Samir Abudayeh, win a contract for the sum of USD 74 million. “

The third case refers to an alleged undue pressure on the part of the president to promote military officers related to the leftist government. So the prosecution could charge him with “the crimes of influence peddling and illegal sponsorship.”
Castillo was questioned last week by the prosecution for alleged pressure on Army and Air Force chiefs to favor some officers in the annual promotion process.
The entity opened the case on November 11 against the then Defense Ministers, Walter Ayala, and Secretary of the Presidency, Bruno Pacheco, for the same case.
Castillo, in power since July 28, narrowly defeated right-wing Keiko Fujimori in the ballot box.
