After two months of being optional in open spaces, masks are once again mandatory in Peru. Again, face masks will have to be worn in all spaces, whether open or not. This measure has been adopted by the Peruvian state in the face of the advance of the fourth wave of coronavirus in the national territory.
COVID-19 has not gone away and cases are increasing in Peru. During a press conference —held this Monday— the head of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), Jorge López, reported that the use of a mask in open spaces is once again mandatory at the national level.
“When we have withdrawn the use of masks for vaccination, there remained an item, a lock that said that if we passed 5% (of infections), automatically all those freedoms that were given were cut off. That is one of the conditions for which we ordered the removal of the mask. But now they are cut, immediately, the use of the mask is already mandatory, ”said the minister.
The head of Health reminded the general population that Peru is facing a fourth wave of coronavirus, for which they requested their collaboration in complying with the measure. “Everyone is required to wear a mask. To urge the population, we are already in a fourth wave, the mandatory use of the mask in any environment, whether it is closed or open, ”he said.

Will the capacity of spaces be modified in the face of the fourth wave of COVID-19?
“We are seeing that the presentation of this wave is somewhat unusual. We are not having the great need to use hospitalizations or ICU beds at a large level.l”, replied López when asked if measures will be taken regarding the capacity in closed spaces after the increase in cases of COVID-19.
López reiterated that the Minsa is taking the use of masks and vaccination against the coronavirus as a priority. “That our population go to get vaccinated is the only way we are seeing so that our population does not reach an ICU bed,” said the minister.

Supreme Decree No. 041-2022-PCM —which approved the optional use of masks in open spaces, in force since May 1— makes no explicit mention of the number of infections required for said obligation to be re-imposed.
The rule published in the ‘Official Gazette El Peruano’ in mid-April, specifies in its article 4 that The mandatory use of the mask is restricted to the percentage of citizens vaccinated against covid-19.
On behalf of the Peruvian state, it has not yet been announced that these changes will be detailed in an upcoming legal text, where the percentages of infections recently mentioned by the Minister of Health are specified.
