Peru regrets its elimination from the Qatar 2022 World Cup. After a goalless draw against Australia in Doha (Qatar), those led were left out after losing in shots from the penalty spot.
(In context: Australia, to the World Cup! It won the playoff against Peru and will be in Qatar)
It is the second time that a South American team has lost an intercontinental playoff. This is how it had gone in the previous playoffs:
Germany 1974: the return of Chile
The playoff between the Soviet Union and Chile was marked by great controversy. First, because of the difficulties that the South Americans had to get to Moscow, and then, because of the coup that took place in Chile that year, 1973.
Chile left Peru on the way, after the withdrawal of Venezuela, which completed the group. Soviet Union was first in its zone, but had to go to playoffs. The game in Moscow ended 0-0 on September 26, 1973.
The second leg was scheduled for November 11, but the Soviets refused to play in the National Stadium, citing security issues. Two months earlier there was a coup d’état in which Augusto Pinochet assumed the presidency. Fifa did not accept and gave the match won to Chile, which went to the World Cup, 2-0. The USSR did not show up. The curious thing is that the Chilean players came out onto the field, played without resistance and scored a goal.
Argentina 78: Hungary, without mercy with Bolivia
The format of the South American tie was very particular. With Argentina classified as the organizer, the remaining teams were divided into three groups of three. The winners met in a triangle in Cali: the first two, Brazil and Peru, qualified directly, and the last, Bolivia, had to go to a playoff. The Bolivians’ rival was Hungary, who showed no mercy: they won 6-0 in Budapest and 2-3 in La Paz, to return to a World Cup after 12 years.
Italy 1990: the triumphant return of Colombia
Even before the qualifying round for the 1990 World Cup in Italy began, Colombia knew that if they won their group, they would have to play a playoff. It was established by lottery. Thus, the team led by Francisco Maturana had to face Israel, which at that time was competing in the Oceania Confederation.
In the first game, on October 15, 1989 in Barranquilla, Colombia won 1-0, with a goal by Albeiro Usuriaga, and in the second leg, on October 30 in Tel Aviv, they tied 0-0. 28 years of drought were over.

United States 1994: Argentina suffered to enter
The famous 5-0 from Colombia to Argentina had consequences. The Albicelestes, due to that defeat, were forced to play a playoff against Australia to seek a place in the World Cup. They drew 1-1 in Sydney and won 1-0 at the Monumental, with a goal from Gabriel Batistuta, to save their place in the World Cup.
Korea-Japan 2002: the return of Uruguay
Uruguay had not qualified for the World Cup since 1990 and had to play a playoff to seek a place for the 2002 World Cup, finishing fifth in the tie.
On November 20, 2001, Australia, the best in the Oceania zone, beat Uruguay 1-0. In the second leg, five days later in Montevideo, the Uruguayans got even: 3-0, with a goal from Darío Silva and two from Ríchard Morales.
Germany 2006: Australia got revenge
The story seemed traced to that of four years ago: Uruguay and Australia faced each other again for a place in the World Cup. This time, the playoffs began in the Centenario: Uruguayan victory 1-0, with a goal by Darío Rodríguez. In the rematch in Sydney, Australia won by the same score, with a goal from Mark Bresciano, and then advanced to the World Cup in penalty shootouts. It was, until now, the only defeat of a South American in a playoff.
South Africa 2010: again, Uruguay to the playoffs
Uruguay was once again fifth in the tie and therefore had to play the playoff again, this time against Costa Rica. He won in San José 0-1, with a goal by Diego Lugano, and then tied 1-1 in Montevideo to qualify for the World Cup again.
Brazil 2014: Uruguay, the specialist
The playoff for the fifth-placed Conmebol team for the 2014 World Cup was against a team from the Asian Confederation. The classified at that instance was Jordan. Uruguay, once again, reached the playoffs and left everything practically defined from the first leg: they won 0-5 in Amman. The 0-0 in Montevideo was a formality.
Russia 2018: the great celebration of Peru
The most recent play-off featured Peru and New Zealand. The first leg, in Auckland, ended 0-0. In Lima, the team led by Ricardo Gareca won 2-0, with goals from Jéfferson Farfán and Cristian Ramos, and thus, the Peruvians celebrated their return to the World Cup after a 36-year absence.
This time, the Peruvians were left with the desire to celebrate and Australia is back in the World Cup, it will be their sixth participation (it was already in 1974, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018).
