The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, assured on Sunday that Mexico granted asylum to the wife and children of her predecessor, the ousted Pedro Castillo, although she did not specify whether they had already left the country.

“A few days ago the chancellor (Peruvian, Ana Cecilia Gervasi) told me that the Mexican state had already granted political asylum (to the president’s family) and what I told the chancellor is to proceed according to the law” said the ruler to the TV Panorama program.

Castillo’s family is made up of his wife, their two children and his wife’s younger sister, also raised as a daughter.
President Boluarte said she had no details and spoke in general of an asylum granted to the former first lady and her children.
He did not specify if they had already left Peru. Lilia Paredes, Castillo’s wife, ands investigated in the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office as a possible coordinator of an alleged criminal organization which was supposedly led by her husband.

In addition, the president clarified that this investigation would not prevent the granting of asylum.
In Peru, violent demonstrations erupted after Castillo, a left-wing rural teacher from humble origins, was ousted by parliament. The repression of the demonstrations has so far registered 20 deaths, according to figures from the Ombudsman’s Office.
Some of the deaths have occurred after the intervention of the military with firearmsin the framework of a state of national emergency.

On December 7, before being subjected to a new impeachment trial, Castillo tried to close Parliament, intervene in the public powers and govern by decree.
Pedro Castillo justified his decision in an obstruction from Congress to govern, in addition to being treated with racism.
Castillo was arrested when he tried to reach the Mexican embassy to seek asylum. The justice decided to place him in pretrial detention until June 2024to be investigated for rebellion.

The government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador recognized at that time that if Castillo requested asylum, it would have been granted. López Obrador and his colleagues from Bolivia, Argentina and Colombia have endorsed the former Peruvian president.
