The Madrid Press Association (APM) has awarded the Honor Award 2021 to EL PAÍS cartoonist José María Pérez, Peridis, for his “long career in the world of journalism through his cartoons, authentic editorials on the news of the day, always with a critical but not acidic vision, and presided over by a sense of humor.” This is how the jury for the journalistic awards that the APM awards each year and that in this 83rd edition have also distinguished the Information Services of Radio Televisión Canaria, for their coverage of the explosion of the La Palma volcano; to the collaborator of The confidential Lucía Franco, as the best young journalist of the year; and the founder and editor-in-chief of We are madrid Diego Casado, in the specialized journalism category in Madrid.
“As I said [Jesús de] Polanco, or someone as wise as him, awards are not requested, but they are not rejected either “, Peridis points out by phone about an award that he is grateful for and which, he understands, is a tribute to perseverance:” I work in a newspaper [EL PAÍS] for 46 years, almost from day one. I am a survivor, ”he adds. And he jokes: “I am under the shadow of the Mingote effect, that as the years went by, prizes were falling.”
Architect, writer and popularizer, José María Pérez’s work goes far beyond the field of vignetting, perhaps especially highlighting his role as a defender of the Spanish Romanesque heritage; promoted the creation and headed the Santa María la Real Foundation for four decades and in the last decade has coordinated the monumental Encyclopedia of Romanesque in the Iberian Peninsula, which, already in the final phase of the preparation of its last volumes, will consist of about 70 volumes and 36,000 pages. “It’s probably my life’s work,” he says.
Although he does not consider himself a journalist, the APM has also valued when explaining his honor award a professional contribution in this field that goes beyond cartoons. The jury thus mentions “his collaborations with TVE programs Weekly report Y Tuesday night, or his interventions in the magacines of Radio Nacional de España with Luis Del Olmo, Julio César Iglesias and Íñigo Alfonso; on Cadena SER, with Fernando Delgado, Iñaki Gabilondo and Javier del Pino, and with Antonio San José on CNN Noticias ”. Likewise, they make special mention of “his strips for EL PAÍS in the Transition years, in which he portrayed the most prominent politicians of the time and which today represent a documentary archive with which to learn about the history of those decisive years In our country”.
On the other hand, the APM also wanted to award this year to the Information Services of Radio Televisión Canaria, for their “extraordinary example of public service during the coverage of the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, on the island of La Palma, which has highlighted the value of regional channels when producing powerful news ”. From Lucía Franco, a 28-year-old journalist who went through the EL PAÍS Newsroom before taking up his current position at The confidential, “His social reports stand out, in which he is personally involved in the matters he deals with, to report and denounce current situations in the Community of Madrid”. And from Diego Casado, his commitment to hyperlocal information in Madrid: he created the medium We are Malasaña which has subsequently grown to become Somos Madrid, linked to the Eldiario.es.
