The imminent British Grand Prix will have a particular value for Sergio Perez, intent on redeeming himself after the disastrous weekend in Canada two weeks ago; in fact, in Montreal, the Mexican did not go beyond the 13th position on the starting grid, thanks to a mistake in braking in Q2 that had led him against the barriers. As if that weren’t enough, the next day ‘Checo’ he had had to deal with a retirement, in that case caused by a gearbox failure.
Almost fourteen days later, on the eve of the tenth world championship round, Perez introduces himself to Silverstone with the clear desire not to lose ground on team mate Max Verstappen. An objective that, inevitably, can only be achieved by crossing the finish line: “It’s always difficult to have a weekend off when you’ve had a tough race, like it happened to me in Canada – commented number 11 – then I arrive at Silverstone with a great desire to remedy. As a team we are making an incredible journey, and I am here to continue contributing to these results by giving my best and making the most of this car. Montreal was the first time I felt the RB18 didn’t ‘fit’ me and this weekend is all about recovering that feeling and returning to the podium. I have worked hard with my team and we know where and what we need to improve, so we are ready for a good weekend ”.
For Perez, moreover, there will be the possibility of remedying not only what happened in Canada, but also his own previous on the Silverstone track: if we exclude his non-participation in 2020 due to the positivity at Covid-19, the Mexican was the protagonist of a weekend to forget in 2021, when he finished at the bottom of the group in the Sprint and then came only 16th in competition. His best ever finish at Silverstone remains the sixth place dating back to the 2016 season, the year in which he was at the wheel of the then Force India.
