After the Canadian Grand Prix, which ended with an accident in qualifying and with a gearbox problem in the race that had forced him to retire, Sergio Perez it had set itself as its primary objective that of referring to Silverstone. The number 11, after a lackluster start, was able to take advantage of the main episodes of the race to be able to go back up to second position final, earned after a spectacular challenge with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Speaking of the developments of that GP, Perez recounted when it happened during the race, from the start to the checkered flag: “It was all great – explained the Mexican in an interview with formula1.com – after the first lap, with Leclerc damaging my front wing and him his, I don’t know how he managed to go on with that damage. In any case, after the first session I was at the bottom, but in the end we didn’t give up and it was great to be able to recover. In the end, moreover, another opportunity presented itself. I was hoping to be able to get on the podium, but having Leclerc and Hamilton nearby created a good fight, and it was great to bring home a similar result. In the last 3-4 laps we all fought each other, and I had a lot of fun ”.
However, the wheel to wheel among the drivers involved in the ‘conflict’ for the podium also generated some controversy for the maneuvers at the limit made in the final laps, considered almost incorrect by some enthusiasts. When asked about this issue, Perez did not share these opinions, even indicating these challenges as an example of a fight in the name of fairness and respect between pilots: “Me, Charles and Lewis all went slightly off the track – he added – but I think it was all allowed also for what was the nature of the challenge. We also gave ourselves the space to attack, so I think it was a fair game. I also believe our battle was a great example of how to compete and of how a driver should behave in a challenge. We were all really on the edge, but when Charles pushed me into Turn 13, for example, he was on the edge, but there was still enough room for me, and the same happened when I pushed Lewis. It was a stupendous challenge, but at the same time very correct“. In conclusion, Checo underlined his feelings about the Austrian Grand Prix, a real home race of the team: “For us it will be a very important weekend here in Spielberg, our boss will be there, so it will be special to be able to give him great satisfaction”.
