On the one hand there are those who are in love with its speed, on the other those who are frightened by the dangers it can create, with walls literally lurking at every point of the track. The brand new circuit in Jeddah seems not to be made for half measures: either you love it, or you hate it. Most pilots have spent positive words on Hermann Tilke’s latest creation, although the safety risks are quite obvious to all. A more critical point of view was provided by the second Red Bull home driver, Sergio Perez, fifth yesterday at the end of qualifying. The former Racing Point driver tried to analyze the strengths and above all the defects of the Saudi plant.
“It is a very nice circuit – Perez admitted – even if it is very dangerous. There are a lot of straights, but in which you still have to turn and you have some blind corners, in which I hope nothing happens. If you want, it’s too dangerous for no real reason“. To make matters worse, at least in qualifying, the speed gap between the cars that were making their timed lap and those that were launching themselves took care of it. “It just seems to me that the track is a little too risky for no reason – reiterated the native of Guadalajara – with the speed we have and with the deltas that there are between the various cars in the different points of the track it seems a bit useless. It will be something that we will probably be able to evaluate after this weekend “.
Next year F1 will race on this track again, but at the beginning of the season. From 2023, however, a new route should be built in Qiddiya. “We cannot forget the fact that safety must have priority – concluded Perez – I’ve talked to some of the other drivers and we all think we’re the ones sitting in the car in the end. With these speed differences, if something goes wrong, there is a huge crash. It’s a straight line. You’re going on a flat straight, I don’t see the reason to do it that way. Obviously it’s partly the ‘character’ of the track, but it’s something we will have to talk about after the race “.
