When Lionel Messi informed FC Barcelona of his departure in the summer, Manchester City was immediately listed in the media as the hottest contender for the services of the world star. The Premier League club will continue after Messi’s surprising whereabouts with the Argentine always associated. City manager Pep Guardiola has now commented on the rumors.
Pep, who just extended his contract as manager of the Cityzens a few days ago, again emphasized which future scenario he preferred for his former protégé (via BBC): “Messi is a FC Barcelona player. I’ve said it a thousand times. As a fan, I want Leo to end his career there.” A clear statement, right?
Not necessarily. Messi could theoretically spend 1-2 years at another club before returning to the Catalans. At 33 he still plays at the highest possible level and could therefore stay with football for a long time.
At the moment, however, it is still unclear whether Messi will stick to his departure request and thus not extend his contract, which will expire in summer 2021. Pep Guardiola does not want to reveal how his team will do on the transfer market either: “We have incredible goals that we would like to achieve. That’s the only thing we think about. I can’t say the rest.”
