At least 16 people have been missing for 15 days in western Venezuela, after depart for a so-called “religious retreat” on a mountainreported this Monday Civil Protection (PC), which will begin the search work on Tuesday.

“From 16 to 20 people have been missing since August 22” when they left for a “presumably” religious activity in the city of La Grita, Táchira state (border with Colombia), the entity’s PC director, Yesnardo Canal, told AFP.
Among the missing is an eight-day-old girl and other minorsadded the official, although press reports indicate that the number of disappeared could be higher.

At the moment, the details of said alleged religious activity are unknown. “It is very suspicious what is being presented with these families (…). There are several versions, we do not know which one is accurate until the agencies in charge do the corresponding investigation,” said the mayor of the Jáuregui municipality, Juan Carlos Escalante.
Commissions from the Criminal and Criminal Investigations Corps (CICPC) and eight Civil Protection officials who team up with drone and canine teams to expedite investigations in the mountains of the Uribante and Jáuregui de Táchira municipalities.

“Apparently there has been information from the residents of the area that they have seen a group of citizens in the different mountainous areas, so we hope to give positive results,” said Canal.
