The head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, confirmed in a telephone conversation with the head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Alexei Reznikov, the support of Kiev from the United States. On Thursday, January 13, reports RIA News with reference to the US Department.
Austin reaffirmed the unwavering US support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including ongoing efforts to build the capacity of the Ukrainian military through defense assistance.
They also discussed Russia’s “military build-up” on the border, and expressed support for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions.
Earlier, US First Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said that Western countries would impose collective sanctions against Russia in the event of its “invasion” into the territory of Ukraine. The restrictions include measures against key financial institutions and export restrictions that will hit major industries, Sherman said.
On January 10, in Geneva, negotiations were held on guarantees of security and strategic stability between the delegations of Russia and the United States. In total, the discussion between the officials of the two countries lasted about 7.5 hours. The talks were held behind closed doors, without journalists, at the US Permanent Mission to the UN Geneva Office.
