The Chinese tennis player reassures her condition after her disappearance and asks that her privacy be respected
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach spoke on video call with Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai. The IOC gives the news in a note. Peng told the president that he is safe and well, that he is living in his home in Beijing but that he would like his privacy respected. Peng, a former Wimbledon doubles champion, was missing after accusing a former senior government official of sexual assault via a social media post published on November 2. Today the champion reappeared in public in a youth tournament in Beijing.
President Bach was joined by the president of the IOC Athletes Commission, Emma Terho, and IOC member in China Li Lingwei, who has known Peng Shuai for many years. At the beginning of the call, which lasted 30 minutes, the athlete thanked the IOC for caring about his well-being. The woman said that right now she prefers to spend time with friends and family but that she will continue to indulge in tennis, the sport she loves so much.
President Bach invited Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai for a dinner once he arrived in Beijing next January and she gladly accepted. The two agreed to extend the invitation also to Emma Terho, and to the Chinese Li Lingwei. “I was relieved to see that Peng Shuai was fine, which was our main concern. She looked relaxed. I offered her our support and to stay in touch, which of course she appreciated, ”said Emma Terho.
