The season debut of Formula 1 in Bahrain was particularly awaited also because, after the controversial events that occurred in the final GP of last year, it marked the official debut of the new Race Directionsupported by a sort of football VAR and led – in this first race of the year – by Niels Wittich in the role of race director. The German will alternate during the year with Eduardo Freitas, in a doubling of the role that last year was occupied by the much contested Michael Masi. The match, as one would say in football, was ‘easy to referee’. There were no duels at the limit of the regulations and the most spectacular challenge, the one between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen after the first series of pit stops, took place in the name of maximum fairness.
It is no coincidence that the only intervention that the marshals had to take in the race was linked to the starting phases. Esteban Ocon of the Alpine he was in fact the only driver penalized, due to a contact in the first corners with the Haas of his friend Mick Schumacher. The penalty – five seconds penalty and two points less on the Super license – appears correct, considering that the Frenchman tried to overtake inside where there was no space and sent the rival car into a spin. On the other hand, no penalty, again in the starting stages, for Lance Stroll, who had overtaken Lando Norris’ McLaren in turn 6. On Friday, however, a reprimand each arrived for Tsunoda and Stroll, guilty of having committed two actions of impeding.
No chaos finally aroused theentry of the Safety Car in the final phase of the race, which has inevitably brought to mind the events of Abu Dhabi for many. In reality, this time the safety car came in with more laps than the end of the race compared to what happened last December in Yas Marina. Ironically, the duration of the ‘caution’ was similar: 5 turns. This time, however, as specified in the new directives, all the cars doubled regularly, thus allowing the race management to restore the green flag for the last seven laps.
