US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday that she will hold consultations in the coming days about the extent to which the Senate is prepared to try former President Donald Trump.
“I will talk to officials about when the Senate will be ready to prosecute whoever has been president of the United States for his role in inciting armed rebellion on the Capitol,” Pelosi, a Democrat, told reporters.
Pelosi will consult with fellow Democrats who enjoy a majority of votes in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Last week, the House of Representatives charged Trump with “incitement to rebellion” as part of his accountability for his role in the storming of the Congressional building on the sixth of January to prevent the confirmation of President Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential elections that took place on November 3.
It is now up to Pelosi to refer the indictment to the Senate to start Trump’s trial.
