More than 215 people were killed in clashes this week between the two countries, after the heaviest fighting in two years, interrupted thanks to international mediation.
Pelosi said her visit “is a powerful symbol of the United States’ commitment to a peaceful, prosperous and democratic Armenia, in a stable and secure Caucasus region.”

The lawmaker is the highest-ranking American official to visit Armenia since the nation gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
During Pelosi’s three-day visit, “guaranteeing our security” will play a “great role,” said the president of the Armenian parliament, Alen Simonyan, before the arrival of the American leader.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought two wars in the last three decades — in 2020 and in the 1990s — for control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, an Armenian-majority enclave, which seceded from Azerbaijan with the support of Yerevan.
Together with France and Russia, the United States co-chairs the Minsk Group of mediators, which has promoted peace talks between these two countries over the last decades, under the auspices of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. (OSCE)
