The President of the Government responded to a question from the spokesperson for EH Bildu in Congress, Mertxe Aizpurua, “He is going to be given consular assistance. We are already in contact with him through our consular services»
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has assured this Friday that the Spanish consulate in Poland has already contacted the Basque journalist Pablo González detained on Monday at the border with Ukraine while covering the Russian invasion. “According to what the Minister of Foreign Affairs informs me, the Spanish journalist is going to be given consular assistance. We are already in contact with him through our consular services”, Sánchez responded to a question from the EH Bildu spokesperson in Congress, Mertxe Aizpurua.
Aizputua has called for the “immediate” release of Pablo González and has stressed that “Poland with his arrest has prevented him from continuing, under unfounded and implausible accusations, his informative work on the war in Ukraine. For this reason, we ask for his immediate release to Poland, and we ask you, Mr. Sánchez, to intercede and do everything possible for his release.”
“There are great information professionals who are today in the midst of a war risking their own integrity to offer citizens first-hand information on what is happening there. My recognition and admiration », she underlined.
His lawyer asks for “diplomatic protection”
For his part, his lawyer has asked the Spanish consul in that country to grant him “diplomatic protection as soon as possible” to promote his release, “with him healthy.” The lawyer Gonzalo Boye Tuset expresses, in this way, his concern for the physical integrity of his client, who is in a situation of incommunicado detention, without being able to contact him or his family, and who is being interrogated without the assistance of a lawyer, which that, in his opinion, only “may have the purpose of bending his will for unknown purposes” so far, since no information of any kind is provided to him.
The lawyer recalls that González “is not in a position to personally request” consular assistance and protection, due to the irregular detention to which he is being subjected by the Polish authorities, who would have him held in the ABW police facilities in Rzeszow.
In his letter, he explains that, from the moment of the journalist’s arrest, he has maintained various communications with the Polish authorities, who have informed him that his client “is being interrogated”, he understands that without the presence of a lawyer.
