The president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, urges the European Union to be prepared before a commercial conflict over the tariff threats of the US administration of Donald Trump. “Life is going to strengthen your sovereignty,” he said during the presentation of the National Food Strategy, a road map to guarantee food sovereignty.
Sanchez has put the focus on which the model of what happened with other sectors follows, such as defense, industry or energy, where the need for sovereignty was evident with the pandemic and after the invasion of Ukraine. It is a strategy that “assures us survival” and that “is not autarchy or protectionism.” On the contrary, it is to assume that “our food supply cannot depend on what anyone decides anywhere in the world or tariffs.”
The president of the Government, said that “a commercial war has no winners”, before some tariffs that will lead to a price increase. “We all lose, especially when the food is at stake” and “the ones that suffer the most are the most vulnerable, for which the price increase is a devastating blow.”
Be prepared
“The EU must show unity to respond to any eventuality, we must be prepared for a potential commercial conflict that Europe does not want,” said Sánchez. And in that scenario, “we will defend farmers, ranchers, cooperatives and we will have agricultural organizations by our side.”
“In front of the short -term, nothing better than a strategic vision in the medium and long term,” said the president of the Government. In a strategy that “is born from dialogue, from the agreement.”
For months, the Ministry of Agriculture has held meetings with the different links of the agri -food chain, from farmers and ranchers, through food companies, consumer associations, hospitality and distribution chains and supermarkets to know Your priorities when designing this strategy.
