“A country that does not investigate becomes impoverished, just like a society that does not innovate,” says the prestigious Archenian traumatologist in the Tertulia de la Luz forum
A country that does not investigate is impoverished, as is a society that does not innovate». This is bluntly and bluntly stated by Dr. Pedro Guillén (Archena, 1938), director of the Cemtro clinics in Madrid and one of the most prestigious traumatologists in the world, through whose hands have passed, among many other patients, from famous artists and athletes from elite to leading politicians and celebrities of all kinds. This Friday in Murcia, during his intervention in the Tertulia de la Luz forum, he claimed the role of science as an ally in the prevention and treatment of diseases.
“The first sign of poverty is disease,” Guillén explained, concluding that “the pandemic has done us so much damage due to lack of research,” although he acknowledged that a posteriori there have been several countries – the US, Russia and China – that “They have done many things” to fight the coronavirus. And he stressed that “the richest country is the one with the best research”, in a clear message to public and private institutions to increase their efforts in this objective.
He went further by pointing out that «in addition to the lack of public investment in research, in Spain there is a lack of culture of civil contribution. In the US who succeeds gives money for research. Here we criticize Amancio Ortega for donating funds to acquire health technology. In this aspect, it is necessary to wake up civil society.”
Regarding biomedical research, to which he has been dedicated since his beginnings in medicine, Dr. Guillén maintained that “it is what is going to make people reach 120 years of age. Nobody here gives away decades of life, but as soon as two or three serious lines are severed, cancer is going to fall like tuberculosis did, which when I started studying was a huge scourge. Cancer will be defeated, I’m sure.”
“Cell as medicine”
Asked about the advances made in cell treatments together with the UCAM professor Juan Carlos Izpisua, whose team has managed to reverse the signs of aging in mice with therapy to rejuvenate the cells, the archenero traumatologist – honorary dean of the Medicine degree of the Catholic University – pointed out that «what is intended is to remove the scars that have been stolen from the human gene to leave it clean, but it will never stop being an adult gene. They are talking about the epigenome, removing from a cell that deterioration that makes them fragile in the face of diseases; that’s the message.” “The cell -Guillen underlined- is a medicine, it is a therapeutic opportunity”.
The talk offered by Tertulia la Luz was attended by representatives of the business, political and, above all, health worlds. Among the attendees were the head of the Cardiovascular Surgery service of the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital, Sergio Cánovas; the regional transplant coordinator and surgeon of this same center, Ricardo Robles; Fuensanta Martínez, director of the Foundation for Health Training and Research in the Region; Pablo Fernández, former director of Nursing at La Arrixaca, and the Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño. The head of the Presidency, Tourism, Culture and Sports, Marcos Ortuño, and the president of the Regional Assembly, Alberto Castillo, were also at the gathering.
