Unfortunately we have to take back some sad news for the gaming world, given that Paul McLaughlin in the past few hours he passed away at the age of only 57, after a long and very hard battle against cancer. Let’s talk about one of the historical figures of important sagas such as Fable And Dungeon Keepeer and which represented an important symbol of creativity and experience in the field for our favorite media.
The man was a head of the artistic section of 22Cans studio and held key roles in the development of Curiosity And Godus but he also worked on the aforementioned saga of Fableas well as a Black and Whiteas well as a Populous 2, Theme Park, Syndicate, Magic Carpet And Dungeon Keeper. His knowledge of the gaming world and his ability as a director has been pivotal in Bullfrog’s studio and in the lives of many of the insiders who have fondly remembered their late friend.
Below are some of the transcripts of some of his longtime friends, taken by British colleagues at Eurogamer:
Peter Molyneux, co-founder of Bullfrog, Lionhead, 22cans e historical friend by Paul McLaughlin:
Paul came into my life in 1990 when he joined Bullfrog as employee number four. He was the first real game artist he ever met. He immediately he became a (figure) of inestimable value, an essential part of the many titles we have all worked on. He absolutely made a difference on Powermonger, Syndicate, Magic Carpet, Theme Park and Dungeon Keeper (…)
Annah Wootten-Pineles, co-lead artist of 22cans:
Paul was known for his “Good Morning” handshakes. He wouldn’t go to his he desk until he completed them (all of them). Originally (it was a gesture) only the executive team, it then expanded to the art department and finally to the entire company. Paul kept this trend regardless of whether it took him longer and longer to say hello to everyone, but I think we were all grateful for him acknowledging him (gesture) of him.
He dies at 57 so not just a man of great experience artistic and talented, but also a kind and mannered person, and with a great sense of team. So we too feel, in our own small way, to offer condolences to the family and friends of this famous and talented creator who with his work has made our universe a little more brilliant and magical.
