The first person to receive a genetically modified pig heart in a groundbreaking surgery in January this year died Tuesday afternoon at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

David Bennett Sr., 57, had serious heart disease and agreed to receive the experimental transplant after being rejected from multiple waiting lists to receive a human heart.

It is not yet known whether the death occurred because the body rejected the foreign organ. “There was no obvious cause identified at the time of his death,” a hospital spokeswoman said. A full examination is yet to be performed and must be published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
