Travelers stuck on the ship became known the day before. The cruise involved watching New Year’s fireworks over the port of Funchal on the Atlantic island of Madeira, but the ship did not arrive at its destination – of 1353 crew members, 52 confirmed COVID-19.
The liner stopped at the port of Lisbon on December 29, the sick were isolated in local hotels. There were no cases of coronavirus among the passengers at that time, they were allowed to freely leave the liner.
On January 3, 12 more people, including four tourists, tested positive for COVID-19.
“Those infected, who had no symptoms of illness or had mild symptoms, were immediately isolated on the ship. <...> The company decided to stop the cruise and drop off passengers, ”said the director of the port of Lisbon, Diogo Vieira Branco.
According to him, the travelers will be taken home by plane, but he did not specify the date of the flight. AIDA Cruises declined to comment on the situation to the agency.
