Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan on November 23 highly appreciated Russia’s actions in initiating the process of demarcation and delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“I highly appreciate the personal efforts of the President of the Russian Federation, the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Defense in this matter,” he said during a virtual press conference.
Earlier on the same day, it became known that Russian President Vladimir Putin, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will hold talks in Sochi on November 26.
The meeting of politicians is timed to the anniversary of the signing of the ceasefire statement in Nagorno-Karabakh on November 9, 2020. The talks will be held at the initiative of the Russian leader.
On November 21, Putin and Pashinyan held a telephone conversation. The Armenian prime minister expressed gratitude for the active mediation efforts of the Russian Federation in the issue of stabilizing the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Now the situation in the region has become aggravated again. So, on November 16, Armenia turned to Russia with a request to help protect the territorial integrity of the country. Armenian Ambassador to Moscow Vardan Toganyan specified that the parties are currently holding consultations through diplomatic and military channels in connection with the aggravation of the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have disputed the ownership of Nagorno-Karabakh since 1988. Then the region, in which mostly Armenians live, announced its secession from the Azerbaijan SSR. During the 1992-1994 military conflict, Baku lost control over Karabakh. In September 2020, during the hostilities, Baku took control of a number of settlements.
In November 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the participation of Russia, signed an agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The document also provides for the introduction of Russian peacekeepers into the region, the exchange of prisoners between the parties to the conflict, the transfer of a number of regions of the region by Armenia to Azerbaijan and the return of refugees to Karabakh.
