The head of the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) Leonid Pasechnik on Sunday, February 27, said that the forces of the People’s Militia were liberating cities and villages, and in the near future they would restore what had been destroyed by Ukrainian troops and provide normal living conditions for fellow citizens.
“After eight long, hard years, we are starting to unite our people, saving them from the criminal Kiev regime. The forces of the People’s Militia of the Republic are liberating the cities and villages of the former Luhansk region, hoisting the tricolor of the Lugansk People’s Republic over them,” the appeal published on site head of the LPR.
According to him, the leaders of the territories also need to establish and record the extent of the damage, promising to restore “the destruction and ensure normal living conditions for fellow citizens” in the near future by joint efforts.
Earlier that day, the Luhansk People’s Republic’s representative office at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination (JCCC) stated that the Ukrainian military carried out 10 attacks on eight settlements of the republic. Gas pipes were damaged in several settlements.
Earlier, on February 26, two explosions thundered in the city of Rovenki in the LPR. Local residents reported that a fire followed the first bang. According to the representative office of the LPR, in Rovenki, an explosion occurred at an oil depot, after which 200 tons of diesel fuel caught fire.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. After that, the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of hitting the country’s military infrastructure and introduced martial law throughout Ukraine. He also said that Kyiv is breaking off diplomatic relations with Moscow and withdrawing its diplomats from the embassy.
The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that the army did not carry out air, missile or artillery strikes on the cities of Ukraine. The civilian population of the country is not in danger. High-precision weapons destroy military infrastructure. As of February 26, 821 Ukrainian military infrastructure facilities have been put out of action. The total number of already faulty equipment includes American Javelin anti-tank missile systems and British NLAW.
On February 21, the heads of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR), Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik, asked Putin to recognize the independence of the republics. The corresponding decrees were signed in the evening of the same day. In the presence of the leaders of the republics, the President of the Russian Federation also signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and assistance. The documents were ratified the next day by both the republics themselves and the Russian State Duma.
The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.
Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been carrying out a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kyiv blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the conflict.
