According to the chairman of the Greens, the attitude towards forests determines whether the parties are serious about nature and the climate.
Chairman Maria Ohisalon according to the Greens will not go to any government where even a euro is cut from education.
“This is a threshold issue,” Ohisalo said at the Green party council meeting in Kouvola on Saturday.
Ohisalo is afraid that the coalition that conducts the party polls will fail on its promises regarding education funding.
“The coalition first said that there would be no education cuts. It then declared education under ‘special protection’. And now the careful reader notices that the coalition’s election program says that savings on education will be ‘avoided’. The Green Party is not only going to avoid education cuts, we are going to prevent them,” Ohisalo said in his speech.
Chairman of the coalition Petteri Orpo has said that education must be under “special protection” in the next election period.
Ohisalon according to which more investments are needed for all levels of education. For example, in Ohisalo’s opinion, basic things should be fixed in elementary school.
“Now we hear a lot of worried messages from the field that there is no time left for the basic work that the teacher is allowed to teach,” Ohisalo told STT.
According to the draft of the parliamentary election program, the Greens would increase the basic funding of higher education institutions and increase the annual number of starting places by more than 5,000.
The Green Party also wants to increase the tuition fee paid to students by 100 euros, the draft shows.
“Study support has really lagged behind the rising cost of living. An increase in the study support is needed so that the student can also focus on that basic task, i.e. studying,” Ohisalo said.
Surroundings- and according to climate minister Ohisalo, it seems that every party has learned to say “green transition” out loud in recent years.
“It still doesn’t say anything about the credibility of the parties’ environmental policy,” Ohisalo said in his speech.
In his opinion, the attitude towards forests determines whether the parties are serious about nature and the climate.
“Some people are more interested in the quick profits of the forest industry than the animals of the forest and the diversity of nature.”
According to Ohisalo, funding for nature conservation must be doubled, old and natural forests must be protected and the rescue package for carbon sinks implemented. He said that the Greens are not part of a government where climate action is being stopped or cancelled.
The Greens’ election program will be approved at the party council meeting this weekend. The program will be announced on Monday.
