The parents of Archie Battersbee, a 12-year-old British boy who fell into a coma in April after what appears to be a viral social media challenge that left him unconscious at home, won an appeal of the case this Wednesday, forcing the justice to review again the ruling that ordered the minor to be disconnected.

In early June, a court had ruled that Battersbee should be taken off life support because he had already died and his body showed no signs of recovery. However, his family appealed and managed to stop the little boy’s disconnection.
This is the story of Archie Battersbee and the court rulings surrounding his case.
The challenge that left him in a coma
Archie’s story has shocked the UK for a few months.
Battersbee, described by his parents as a gymnastics talent, has been in a coma since April 7 when he was found unconscious at home with a tie around his neck.
According to his mother, Hollie Dance, the minor was injured while trying to participate in a viral social media challenge known as the “blackout challenge.”
The digital newspaper ‘Enter’ points out that this challenge “encourages users to hold their breath for as long as they can, even suffocate if necessary, until they pass out.”
The minor has been hospitalized since then at the Royal Hospital in Whitechapel, in east London.

the legal dispute
After a few days in the hospital, the doctors determined that the minor is brain dead and recommended disconnecting him from support that keeps him alive in the moment. A measure that was rejected by his parents, who consider that the minor can survive.
Hollie Dance and her father, Paul Battersbee, say that the child’s heart is still beating and that the medical center must continue treatment.

But the case entered into a legal dispute when on May 5 the lawyers of the hospital in which the minor is located asked a judge in the United Kingdom to resolve the situation of the 12-year-old boy and determine what is best for him. .

In the middle of the legal process, according to the British newspaper ‘Daily Mail’, the judges ordered tests on the minor’s body and visited the child in the hospital to find out the details of his state of health.
According to the aforementioned newspaper, at a hearing on June 8, a specialized doctor told the judge in the case that “the minor did not present perceptible brain activity.”
The decision of the judge in the case
And the ruling on the case finally came on Monday, June 13. Emma Arbuthnot, a British judge, said that Archie Battersbee is “dead” and beyond recovery, so he must stop receiving treatment.
As Arbuthnot noted in a written opinion, “Irreversible cessation of neural stem cell function has been conclusively established.”
“I give permission to the medical professionals at the Royal London Hospital to cease respiration for Archie Battersbee; extubate him; cease the administration of medications and not attempt any cardiac or pulmonary resuscitation when cardiac output ceases or respiratory efforts cease,” the judge said. .

The magistrate also indicated that if Archie “continues with mechanical ventilation, the probable outcome is sudden death and the prospects of recovery are nil.”
“He finds no pleasure in life and his brain damage is irrecoverable,” he concluded.
His mother Holly reacted that time and stated that the family would appeal the sentence on the future of her son.
“I feel disgusted that the hospital and the judge have not taken into account the wishes of the family, I do not think that Archie has been given enough time, from the beginning we have asked ourselves: why are you in such a rush?” the mother in statements to the press.
“His heart is still beating, he has squeezed my hand and as a mother I know he is still there,” the woman added.
And Archie’s family won on appeal. This Wednesday, the authorities ordered that a new hearing be held in which the Superior Court must re-evaluate the case and determine what is the best decision for the 12-year-old boy.
In their appeal, the family stated that their position and beliefs were not taken into account in the previous ruling that ordered the child to be disconnected, according to the BBC.
“The case should be referred for consideration by a High Court judge, who should consider whether it is in Archie’s best interest to continue life-sustaining treatment,” the family’s lawyers said Wednesday.
Now, there will be a new hearing on July 11 to determine if Archie is disconnected or if life support is maintained.
