The parents of brain-dead British boy Archie have lost another battle in a legal battle over the prolongation of their child’s life. A Supreme Court rejected their request, British media reported about their attempt to save the 12-year-old boy’s life.
Archie’s family does not want the doctors to take him off the ventilator and again went to the highest court in the country. The parents hoped that the chief justices would overturn a lower court ruling. The parents wanted to get a special commission to look into the matter, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
A lower court had ruled Monday that the treatment of the child may be stopped. The court considered the high-profile case at the last minute after a request from the UN committee to continue hearing Archie. However, the court ruled that the life support treatment could be terminated on Tuesday afternoon. The parents then went to the Supreme Court.
Archie Battersbee has been in a coma since April. According to the hospital, his prospects are “nil”. He was seriously injured when, according to his mother, he supposedly participated in an online challenge, in which participants deliberately try to become unconscious. According to the parents, Archie is making good progress.
