‘Parallel Mothers’, the new film by Pedro Almodóvar, will open the 78th edition of the Venice Film Festival, which will take place from September 1 to 11.

The filmmaker from La Mancha said in a statement that he was born as a director in Venice in 1983, in the ‘Mezzogiorno Mezzanotte’ section and that now, 38 years later, he has been called to open the Mostra. “I cannot explain the joy and the honor and how much this means to me without being complacent. I am very grateful to the Festival for this recognition and I hope to live up to it ”, he stated in the note.
For his part, festival director Alberto Barbera said he was happy to receive the film: «I thank Pedro Almodóvar for giving us the privilege of opening the Film Festival with his new film, an intense and sensitive portrait of two women facing each other. a pregnancy with unpredictable consequences, all against the background of a reflection on the inescapable need for the truth that must be unwaveringly pursued ».
The film, which also stars Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde, Aitana Sánchez Gijón, Julieta Serrano and Rossy De Palma, will be released in Spain on September 10. Pedro Almodóvar, 71, had received in 2019 a Golden Lion of honor for his entire career.
