SAO PAULO (Reuters) – After the evacuation of most of the residents of the region affected by the flooding of a hydroelectric reservoir, the Municipality of Pará de Minas on Monday minimized the risks to the community in case the dam of Companhia de Tecidos Santanense breaks, affected by the heavy rains that hit the state of Minas Gerais.
In a press conference broadcast this Monday on social media, the mayor of Pará de Minas, Elias Diniz, said that most of the families that could be harmed in the event of a dam failure have already been displaced.
“Only two families were left stranded, we are already taking action this morning,” he said.
“The community of Carioca is outside the risk map of the plant itself, in case there is a rupture. And at the same time, the water there will never reach Pará de Minas”, he added.
The plant owned by Santanense is a small hydroelectric generating plant (CGH) with 1.47 megawatts (MW) of power, according to information made available on the website of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).
The mayor also informed that during the night a fracture was identified in a duct that carries water to the turbine of the plant.
“We are consulting with Santanense so that we can make a joint analysis, as the dam itself is leaking. We are not in a position to carry out a visual analysis, we have to carry out a technical study”, he said.
