Mexico City.– The PAN senator, Marko Cortés, presented an initiative to reform the Constitution so that the head of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) is elected through popular vote.
“It is supposed to be the great defender of the people of Mexico, the National Human Rights Commission. I would say to the Moreno government: what objection would they have to this Commission, which today is a zero to the left, really being elected by all the people throughout the country,” he said.
Cortés, also the national leader of the blue and white, explained that this process is different from that of the election of ministers, judges and magistrates, which requires a certain level of technicalization, capacity and not just popularity. “But the CNDH is the one who will defend the people from any abuse of power by the government, both federal, state and municipal,” he stressed.
The opposition leader also launched “a challenge” to President Claudia Sheinbaum to correct the security strategy in the country and to classify the crime of narcoterrorism, so that international collaboration and effective results can be achieved.
Cortés Mendoza extended his hand to the head of the Executive on behalf of National Action to change the strategy and ensure that there is true international coordination and collaboration in the fight against organized crime. “It is not about submission, it is not about losing the autonomy or sovereignty of our country. Mexicans lose sovereignty when they cannot travel on a highway, when they cannot sell their products without being extorted,” he stated.
