Ricarda Lang raises objections to the return of the controversial former Green Party member Boris Palmer. He counters and is open to reunification.
Berlin – The ex-Green Mayor of Tübingen, Boris Palmer, could be brought back into the party after resigning from the Green Party as chairman and far-reaching board member. At least according to Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), Palmer has “enriched the Greens for a very long time.” Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) had also expressed the wish that Palmer would return to the party.
In conversation with the Southwest Press The Green Party politician Ricarda Lang also responded to this request about her resignation from the federal presidency and was less convinced. “Boris Palmer decided to leave the party at the time because the content was no longer suitable,” said Lang. “I don’t know what has changed since then in terms of content.” Palmer had left the party at the time in order to forestall expulsion proceedings. In one Facebookpost countered Palmer Lang’s objection.
Ex-Green Party politician Boris Palmer responds to Ricarda Lang with a question
“I find your question as to whether anything has actually changed since I left the job exciting,” wrote Palmer. His expulsion from the party was based primarily on his migration policy positions, for which he repeatedly came under criticism from the Greens. This ultimately accumulated in 2021 with the start of a party expulsion process and in 2023 with the party leaving the party. In his contribution, Palmer cited isolated reasons for exclusion from the procedural document, which contained a total of 34 pages of controversial statements. He raised the question “whether these are still reasons for exclusion today or rather elements of current government policy”.
Among other things, it included demands for an upper limit for refugees in 2015 and deportations if rules of conduct are violated, including to unsafe areas such as Afghanistan. Under the traffic light government, 28 criminals were recently deported to Afghanistan, shortly after a new “virtue” law was introduced, which introduced further behavioral restrictions, particularly for women, but also for men. Furthermore, no upper limit for refugees was introduced, but border controls were extended to all German borders.
Palmer sees the Greens’ development as positive – and is open to returning to the party
After the numerous resignations from the Greens and the Green Youth, Palmer supported the development: “Anyone who wants to do politics against the economy and with Marx’s theories is simply in the wrong place with a Green party,” Palmer shot on Facebook after the board of the Greens Youth followed the party leadership. The Mayor of Tübingen had actually stated that he no longer wanted to comment on Green Party issues. Without “youthful class fighters,” the Green Party would be freed from “ideological ballast,” wrote Palmer.
Large parts of the incumbent Green Party politicians were equally unaffected by the reaction to the resignation and departure of the top young people in the party. At around the same time, Kretschmann spoke in a podcast Time about a possible return of the controversial politician. Opposite the dpa Palmer said when asked: “Before I say anything publicly about this, I would like to speak to Kretschmann in peace.” However, in the past he has been fundamentally open to a return to the Greens. In a written statement about leaving the party, the Green Youth complained about “a massive shift to the right that the Greens support”. (lismah)
