MONTEVIDEO (Reuters) – Palmeiras won their third Copa Libertadores –the second in a row– this Saturday, after beating Flamengo 2-1 in overtime, in the final between the last two champions of the main club competition on the continent.
In the match played at the traditional Centenário stadium, in the Uruguayan city of Montevideo, in front of 60,000 fans, Palmeiras opened the scoreboard at 4 minutes through Raphael Veiga, while Flamengo drew at 27 minutes of the second half with a goal by Gabigol.
In overtime, Palmeiras reached the second goal with Deyverson in the 5th minute, after taking advantage of an error in the beginning of Flamengo’s defense.
To repeat the title conquered in the 1999 and 2020 editions, Palmeiras left Atlético Mineiro, São Paulo and Universidad Católica along the way, after beating Defensa y Justicia, Independiente del Valle and Universitario de Deportes in the group stage.
The team, led by Portuguese Abel Ferreira, is the first to lift the trophy twice in a row since Argentina’s Boca Juniors achieved the feat in the 2000 and 2001 editions of the competition.
With the victory, Palmeiras qualified for the group stage of the next Libertadores and will play the Recopa against Atlético Paranaense, winner of the Copa Sudamericana a week ago.
Flamengo missed the opportunity to win their third Libertadores title, after the titles in 1981 and 2019.
