The United Nations General Assembly took a historic step on Friday by voting overwhelmingly in favor of the accession of Palestine as a member state of the UN. This decision, although symbolic, has unleashed the anger of Israel and has received opposition from countries such as USA and Argentina.
Palestine held the vote as an endorsement of its rights, affirming that it meets all the requirements of the United Nations Charter to be a full member. However, Israel condemned the decisioncalling it a reward for violence, which generates additional tensions in an already convulsed region.
The resolution, presented by the United Arab Emirates, was approved by 143 countries, 25 abstained and nine voted against, including the United States, IsraelArgentina, Czech Republic and Hungary.
The Palestinians relaunched their bid for full UN membership in early April after the United States vetoed the Security Council’s positive recommendation. Now, following the endorsement of the General Assembly, Palestine obtains “additional rights and privileges”, although its right to vote and to be a member of the Security Council is excluded.
International reactions
The vote revealed divisions among European countries, some of which abstained while others voted against. The United States, opposed to any unilateral recognition, warned that it would veto any similar measure in the Security Council.
On the tribune of the UNIsraeli ambassador Gilad Erdan, accused the Assembly of “granting state rights to an entity partially controlled by terrorists.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said the UN General Assembly vote in favor of accession rewarded Hamas and “violence.”
The decision “rewards the murderers and rapists of Palestine and undermines efforts to free the hostages” held by the Palestinian Islamist movement since October 7, Katz wrote on the social network X.
Although the vote is not binding, it establishes a precedent and grants certain privileges to Palestine.
