The Pakistani parliament has passed a law allowing courts to order chemical castration of certain sex offenders.
Islamabad – According to this, repeat offenders, gang rapists and pedophiles can receive drugs that inhibit the sex drive. The law also provides for the establishment of special tribunals for faster proceedings.
The law, criticized by human rights activists and legal experts in Pakistan, was introduced by order of the President last December. However, the government was unable to obtain the mandatory parliamentary approval within four months. On Wednesday, the parliament in Islamabad approved the provisions. The ruling comes in response to several sex crimes that led to an outcry of horror in the South Asian country. (dpa)
