In Italy it is Padelmania. The sport that combined the rigor of tennis with the fun of beach rackets exploded in the most difficult period for all of us. In fact, during the pandemic, when indoor or contact sports activities were at a standstill, the possibility of playing outdoors and without crowds gave the padel a propulsive boost. To confirm this to Adnkronos are the data collected by the Padel Observatory for 2021, compared to the previous year.
The structures where to play padel have grown by 125%, going from 815 to 1,831 in just one year, while the padel courts increased by 155%, from 1,832 to 4,669, with the greatest increase in Lazio, followed by Lombardy and Sicily. In 15 regions there are over 100 fields (in 7 regions they even exceed the 200 fields available), while in 2020 there were just 5 Italian regions with this significant number of fields where you can practice padel.
These figures go hand in hand with the significant increase in Fit (Italian Fitness Federation) members who, according to the latest rankings (of December 27, 2021), reach 56,465 units of which 46,838 men and 9,627 women; from 2020 to 2021 there was thus an increase of 45,652 active members in the padel. These are the practitioners enrolled in the Fit, but obviously, if we consider all the amateur players, the figure is much higher and it is estimated that 800 thousand regulars and over 1.5 million padel fans in Italy.
Given the rapid success of this sport, there are many who practice it only for passion and for the sake of trying it, without however having an adequate physical preparation for the type of movement and efforts required. And unfortunately injuries and traumas are just around the corner, so it is essential to rely on expert advice to get the best out of the field.
“One of the peculiarities of padel is that it is a sport suitable for everyonebut for those who intend to start it, the fundamental principles are those of continuity, frequency, progressiveness and specificity “, explains TO
lfredo Maria Mancini, fit physical trainer. “The recommended number of sessions is two or three a week lasting one hour each. The repetition of training over time is the necessary condition to improve performance, on the contrary the absence of training stimuli causes the previously acquired skills to regress. Lessons and games must have a gradual increase in quantity and executive difficulty. It can be an excellent strategy to always play with different people and to vary a lot the choice of exercises with the teacher, as a standardization of training produces a stagnation and also a probable regression of the skills matured ”, explains Mancini.
“Those who are out of practice will have to concentrate on exercises aimed at improving organic-muscular abilities which play a role of considerable importance in the padel: strength, speed, endurance and joint mobility. Just think what influence the modulation of the force has in the execution of all the shots, or how resistance can speed up the processes during the game, or how quick being in search of the ball increases the possibilities of tactical choice or technique during the phases of the game. Therefore, it is important to follow both an exercise program carried out at maximum executive speed and to increase endurance taking into account the aerobic aspects with prolonged exercises over time and anaerobic with short duration but high intensity exercises “, advises the osteopath Antonio Minichiello.
