BRASILIA (Reuters) – Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (DEM-MG) has already made his decision and will reject the impeachment request of STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes presented by President Jair Bolsonaro, said a source who closely follows the Subject.
The decision will still be formalized and must be announced by Pacheco in a press conference soon after the closing of the session of the House. As president of the Senate, it is up to Pacheco to decide whether to accept or reject requests for impeachment from justices of the Supreme Court (STF).
The request was presented by Bolsonaro last Friday, in the wake of an institutional crisis between the Powers. The president of the Republic alleges that the member of the court acted as “a true censor of freedom of expression by prohibiting the debate of ideas and respect for diversity”.
In July, Moraes ordered the Federal Police to resume an investigation into Bolsonaro’s alleged interference in command of the corporation.
Then, in early August, he received a criminal report sent by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) against the president for his conduct in attacking the Brazilian voting system.
A few days later, the minister ordered the opening of an inquiry against Bolsonaro for leaking confidential information from the Federal Police’s investigation into a cyber attack suffered by the TSE in 2018, months before the elections and without any connection with those.
He was also responsible for the decision that determined the arrest of former deputy and PTB president Roberto Jefferson, an ally of Bolsonaro, in the scope of an inquiry that investigates the existence of a digital criminal organization that disseminates false news and attacks on democracy
