BRASILIA (Reuters) – Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) announced on Wednesday the withdrawal of his pre-candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic.
“My commitments as president of the Senate and with the country are urgent, unavoidable and do not allow any space for vanity. Therefore, I say that it is impossible to reconcile this difficult mission with a presidential campaign”, declared the senator from the tribune of the House.
“The president of the Senate needs to act like a magistrate, conducting the work with serenity, balance and exemption, seeking possible consensus on behalf of the best for the country. Which is incompatible with a national electoral clash, however civilized the process may be,” he added.
Pacheco also stated that he will defend the strengthening of institutions and democracy, specifically citing the guarantee of free voting.
“I will fight, inside and outside the Senate, so that this year’s general elections will result in the institutional and democratic strengthening of the country…. Any attempt at democratic regression must be vehemently rejected.”, he defended.
The senator also said he was “absolutely certain” that the PSD, his party, will know how to take the “best path”.
